Driving to the South of France we stopped off in the city of Troyes, 150 km south-east of Paris. Troyes is the capital of the Aube department in north-central France.
Upon arriving we made the mistake of following the Michelin directions to find the address of our hotel. Unfortunately these were less than helpful, taking us through back-streets and around in circles when (as wel later discovered) we could've just taken one of the main roads around the city and made one simple turn into the street our hotel was situated on. Lesson 1 - do not trust Michelin directions when in a city!
We arrived at our hotel and found parking on the surrounding streets to be a little hectic. Nevertheless we found a space within reasonable walking distance. The one problem with street parking in Troyes is payment. You pay a meter for a ticket but cannot pay for more than 1hour 59 minutes at a time, which means a lot of returning to the car to feed the meter.
Later that evening we ventured into the main pedestrian area of the town where most of the restaurants appeared to be located. We had seen a restaurant earlier on in the day and I for one wanted to try it out, it ended up being one of the best decisions of the week! The place was called L'Illustre. I had seen the website back in England and the mention of a 'Club' had put me off somewhat, but I was to be pleasantly surprised. It was one of the nicest meals I've had and we plan to return on the final leg of our journey, back to England.
Click the title to have a look at the website for yourself and should you be passing, definitely drop by and try some of the delicious food! I highly recommend the duck magret with apple. Absolutely divine!
